Fast and Furious–Shorter,Snappier, but Succulent–Blog Writing #5 by Cher’ley

 This blog by Cher’ley  Grogg

Fast and Furious number 7-WOW-I remember the first one. That’s how many people see their lives, so bloggers need to write that way–fast and furious.

After defeating Owen Shaw and his crewDominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and the rest crew are able to return to the United States and live the normal life again as they had wanted, but Owen’s older brother, Ian Shaw (Jason Statham), is after Dominic, seeking revenge for the death of his brother, putting the entire crew in danger once more. After learning of Han’s death, the crew sets out to find the man who killed one of their own, before he finds them first.

Just as Fast & Furious number 7 has to follow through with what the first 6 started, so does the body of your blog have to follow through on what you promised in the introduction. Your body  can be written in paragraphs, with bullets, numbered lists, headings, or a mix of these. Make use of whichever format is easiest for you, and helps tell your story better. But, keep it fast paced and to the point.

Use bullets

Your blog needs to encourage people to read it so it needs to be:

  • Engaging
  • Easy to read
  • Entertaining

Use Numbers

  1. Limit each paragraph to less than 5 sentences
  2. Make sentences shorter
  3. Strive for quality

Use Headings

The Secrets of Blog Post Length

Most people who read blogs don’t have a lot of time or patience to read thousands of words of content. They’re looking for quick access to information or entertainment. Therefore, you should try to write succinctly and use headings to break up long blocks of text. Make sure your blog posts are scannable and consider breaking posts that reach the 1,000 word mark into a series of posts (which is also a great way to encourage people to come back to your blog again to read more). Jennifer Flatten wrote an interesting blog on scanning.  What Type of Reader are You?

I shoot for 300-350 words, when I insert photos and links,  they add length to the blog entry I also find when I shoot for 300 words, I end up with closer to 400. In this busy world, it’s better for the writer and the reader to have shorter blogs.

For SEO purposes, use keyword density no more than every 100 words. In other words, it’s good to repeat the main words in your title a couple of times in the body of the blog. Remember your incoming and outgoing links from last lesson.

For the succulent part of this blog, perhaps you’ll consider Vin Diesel or Paul Walker

  1. Reminds me of a book on creative writing called “Bird By Bird.” When they were kids, author’s brother waited until the last minute to do a book report on birds. He didn’t know where to start. Their dad, a bohemian type famous author, told his son, “Bird by bird.”

    1. I love that book Mike. It’s the one by Anne Lamott, right? I like her style of writing and the book is half biography, half writing info – much like the Stephen King book “On Writing” which is definitely my favorite!

  2. Thank you for all the great tips and information Cherley. Adding it to my virtual library of helpful writing tips. This series has been really good. I’ve been reading Seth Godin’s blog for quite some time and he really keeps it short and sweet. I’m a visual person so I spend more time than I should trying to find pictures to go with my blog so I do spend too much time on my posts and although I try to keep them short enough I don’t always succeed. But there’s still hope for me!

    1. Linda, I’m like you. Often it takes me much longer to find the pictures than it does to write the blog, but I think the photographs are so important. Cher’ley

  3. Good points about writing a blog!

But some of this post is unreadable. You also need to keep in mind how the post displays. The second paragraph with the blue words and also the purple heading aren’t legible on my laptop screen no matter what I do. I suspect it would be even worse on a small screen. This is one of the things experts emphasize when designing a blog. Check out how it looks on different browsers and devices.

    1. Good point Kate, and I looked at it on my phone, Kindle, and Laptop. I didn’t have any problems, but I’ll go back and change it so that everyone can read it. Sorry. Cher’ley

  4. Again, excellent advice. I too wasn’t able to read the white boxed-in portion, it was blank, but I value all the parts and references given in the rest. Thanks Cher’ley. I will go back and check my blog again!

  5. Great advice, Cherley. Always, I try to keep writing as simple and entertaining as possible. People aren’t looking for long articles or lots of technical information in surfing the blog world. Totally agree. Like the idea of the bullets. Lots to think about now.

  6. Thanks, Cher’ley. I haven’t used bullets or numbers much, nor have I really done series blogs, except for one series on a trip to Italy. Good food for thought. And thanks for the succulent pic of Paul Walker. 😉 Like you and Linda, it takes me a while to find pics sometimes, unless I take them myself.

    1. Stephanie, thanks for reading. I don’t usually do series either, but thought writing a blog post would make a good one. LOL on Paul Walker. Yeah, the photos we take ourselves are the easiest. The Morgue Files are always a good source too. the first one I posted on here was not from there, nor was it Zemanta, sometimes others don’t show up, even if they are in the Creative Commons file. 7. Some blogs I follow are definitely of the short and sweet variety, Cher’ley, but others are the opposite and have ‘heavy’ content. I do think most peoole don’t have time for long stuff but I find it very hard to write short posts. It’s something to keep in mind for me! 🙂
