10 Things I’ve Learned from Being Sick

I don’t feel well. I came to Kentucky to visit my family over Memorial Day weekend, and I had intended to drive back to Atlanta today. But a stomach bug hit me late yesterday afternoon, and I’m in no condition to drive. I’m much better than I was now, but I still feel really week, and my stomach is still a little shaky. As this post is due on Tuesday, however, I decided I could go ahead and write it. As Kathy Waller noted in this WWW post, most writing is done sitting down.

Since I’ve been a bit preoccupied with how my body feels, please forgive me for making this post about what I’ve learned from being sick. (I’ve learned these things in other ways too, but being sick always kind of brings them home.)

  1. I am not in control. I can try various treatments, but mostly I just have to let the illness take its course.
  2. The body and its processes take precedence over our goals/plans. See item #1.
  3. Be in the moment. Being sick gives you no choice. You have to be right there, dealing with whatever your body wants you to deal with. See item #2.
  4. Pay attention. You recognize the signs when you feel them. Be ready to move. See items #1, 2 & 3.
  5. Rest leads to recovery. Sleep when you can.
  6. I still want my Mommy, but I can take care of myself. See items #3, 4 & 5.
  7. Others understand. They’ve been through it too.
  8. Moving slowly is still moving.
  9. Though we usually take it for granted, feeling well and healthy is a cause for gratitude.
  10. This too shall pass. Pun intended. ‘Nuf said.

  1. I’m sorry you’ve been sick. You handle it much more philosophically than I ever could. I love your line about still wanting your mommy. We never outgrow that, do we?

I hope you feel better soon!

    1. Thanks, Joe. I certainly haven’t gotten over wanting my mama there to make me feel better. But I’ve learned to deal with my own sickness. And I am much better now, thanks!

  2. Thanks for writing through your sickness. So to the point. I actually smiled as I read it. I related. My main problem is I can’t grasp the thought of getting old. Cher’ley

  3. Oh the plans of mice and men, you nailed it whith your list of ten. We are only in control of how we react to the moment. Take care, listen to your body and be safe. Doris

  4. Get well soon wishes are winging across the pond to you. I’m rarely ill beut i was in March/April and it took almost a month to shake off the viral infrection. That rest you mentioned is really best when you begin to feel ill!

  5. You are amazing to sit and write about being sick while being sick! I trust your travel back home went well and that you’ve been getting plenty of rest. Your list fits life to a “T”, whether one is sick or well. Take care of yourself, Stephanie!

    1. Oh, and the trip back home was good–despite a heavy thunderstorm with some hail a few miles north of Atlanta. Slow going and hazard lights for a bit, but we made it.

  6. Brilliant to think of writing a post about being sick while being sick! I think the key point you made is “listen to your body.” I don’t do that enough and often suffer consequences, i.e. being in the hospital for my back again when I should have taken things more slowly and gotten plenty of rest, taken my meds and taken care of myself. Sigh. I guess I’ll never learn, but my therapist keeps drumming it into my head every week. Maybe there’s hope? Glad you are feeling better and made it home ok. Oh, and I still want my mommy too when I’m sick, but I know she’s looking down and sending me lots of love so that’s ok.
