Seems, every time I find something I really like, it gets discontinued. There have been several programs over the years that I used a lot and then they were no more. Remember the sheep?
I want you to know I spent a half hour trying to download a version of the Scmpoo Sheep. I was unsuccessful. Yesterday I was trying to find a Google Calendar that would work on my sidebar. I used to have Google Desktop, and I loved it, but of course, it was discontinued—I imagine it’s at the sheep farm where retired computer programs and games go. I spent a couple of hours trying to find a sidebar that would have a notepad and a calendar. I wanted them both to stay open when I was working on other things on the internet.
Then what happens, I end up downloading all these zip file openers, and download managers that I don’t need, so I have to waste more time taking them back off.
Why-O-Why can’t you just get what you ask for or get a no way answer? What would you rather get, a stumbling through of all kinds of programs that unrelated to what you are searching for or a plain old No-No Way Jack-Nope-Not Possible-Thanks, but no thanks? Technology Woes and Time Sucks.
And why would you ask about sheep and your search gives you wild and crazy zig-zags? How are they related?
Family Tree Maker, I bought the original, the Family Tree Maker II and then III, IV, and V. Now it’s useless. I’m hoping I can get my family tree information which I saved on a CD (before DVDs), to transfer to my computer so that I might update it someway. I gave a couple of feeble attempts and didn’t get anywhere, so I know this is going to be a major time suck.
I did find a program that would allow me to upload my videos from my Camcorder after the original program discontinued. It took me a while, but at least I can still use the recorder. I figured out a workaround for my very expensive digital camera that is only a few years old because that program discontinued too.
Records, 8 track tapes, cassette tapes, micro cassette tapes, VHS tapes, CD’s, DVD’s, Flash Drives, External Hard Drives, Cloud Storage, and so it goes. I’m not sure if there is something newer, perhaps you know.
Normally I try to find solutions to the Woes, but in this case, I think the solution is, don’t try to bring the past back. What’s gone is gone. I even donated things from my garage yesterday, a perfectly good microwave, because I updated to a built in one, my TIVO, my Qualcomm communication system, a GPS, and some other old electronics. Maybe some Geek can revive these expensive electronics that have been discontinued or replaced by newer models.
How many old cell phones do you have lying around? How about Wireless headsets? What programs did you love that are no more? Do you spend a lot of time trying to find comparable programs?

You said it perfectly, a time suck. What is really frustrating, the cloud is nothing more than another name for the storage systems they had when computers were new. You sent your programs, etc to a main server then accessed them from there. It’s just faster now.
But if you want to work in the world today, you have to have the most compatible and latest. GRRR. I can relate. Doris

I’m fond of saying that technology is like spouses. You can’t live with them. You can’t live without them.

I do recall a couple of recent Cherley posts mentioning problems with your cell phone. Defaulting to factory settings, I believe. Electronics are frustrating. New versions come out so fast that we find our stuff obsolete. Remember floppy disks? I can remember using Commodore computers. Played war games and a baseball game on them. I’m working on a HP laptop now that’s three years old. Back in 1989 I used an Apple Macintosh. Even had an early version of Pagemaker on it that I used to make newsletters and brochures. How times have changed.

I got a new phone, but it will not hook up to my TV, which is important to me. Cher’ley

I don’t play games on my computer or phone, but I do find tons of emails a time suck and social media can be as well. But, a writer needs both, so learning to manage time is what I need to improve upon. I’ve been off-line nearly 10 days, and I have to admit, it was GREAT! (though I did feel a bit lost without “seeing” my friends virtually). There is the good, the bad, and the ugly about technology and the continual changes that befall us.

It’s funny how addicting all of the electronics are nowadays when we never had them growing up. I don’t think I could live without my phone or laptop. I need the internet for so many things, and boy is it a time suck!

You’re spot on, Cherley. it’s the time sucks from new ‘so called’ improvements which means I’ve hardly any spare time these days. I’ve also got favourite old programmes that have been discontinued and I’ve no time to work out how to work my way through the newest porgrammes because everything takes longer. I’ve various things stored (including images) on an extrernal hard drive that I use for backup but can’t access the info even from my upgraded moblile phone. Being at my desk is ideal but with my non writing family commitments I’m often away from my office area. In this I’m probably no different from many of us! It’s the price of progress and linking some particular thing too much.

Unfortunately most of the time the new and improved version of things isn’t what I am looking for either. I had a program that came with a printer that allowed me to do several things like make calendars and greeting cards. When the printer died the new and improved printer didn’t offer that software. Silly things like playing games off line are no longer available either.
I had a hard time replacing my cell phone last year. I didn’t want a smart phone, I don’t text and I didn’t want to access the internet from my phone, I just wanted to have it in case of an emergency or to call home and say I am going to be late. It took a bit of doing and the techs at the phone store took a trip down memory lane when I showed them the 10 year old phone I was replacing, but I did eventually get what I wanted.
People seem confused when I don’t want the latest thing. Buying a new TV was a challenge. We have an antenna and had no intentions of hooking up the TV to the internet. Watching TV isn’t a priority for me. This confused the salesperson. But it also gave him a chance to get rid of a TV he thought he would never sell because it was last years model without all the bells and whistles. I’m with you the new and improved version isn’t always the best
